Investors around the globe are gaining interest in Portugal's Golden Visa and it is showing up directly in the country's investment figures. According to the recent data from the Bank of Portugal, foreign direct investment reached €6.7 billion in the first half of 2026. This number shows a turnaround in the net flow from the same period last year. The Golden Visa is currently attracting new capital at almost three times the rate at which funds are being withdrawn.

Golden Visa Route Is Growing

According to the Portuguese Association of Investment Funds, Pensions and Assets (APFIPP) Golden Visa eligible funds attracted €283 million between January and May 2026. During the same period redemptions reached €94.7 million. This gap between investments and redemptions shows how new investors are entering the Golden Visa fund route faster than existing investors are leaving it.

This growth is happening even after an uncertain year for the program as Portugal's Nationality Law changed the residency to citizenship timeline for new applicants. New investment is still coming in strong and the €500,000 Venture Capital fund or Grant Nest fund route remains the leading gateway for new applicants. This shows that trust in the Golden Visa program has not gone down.

Why the Golden Visa Is Getting More Attention

Portugal's full investment numbers explain why Golden Visa matters so much. Out of the total €6.7 billion in foreign direct investment, €6 billion went into the capital of Portuguese companies and €1.7 billion went into property. France gave the largest contribution at €7 billion. Spain came next with €1.9 billion. A drop of €4.6 billion linked to Luxembourg brought the final total down a bit.

The Golden Visa acts as one of the clearest channels of entering the foreign capital in the Portugals economy right now. Golden Visa funds are designed to directly invest in Portugal's business and economic activities. It helps the economy to recover. With the increasing numbers of investments in Portugal, investors now consider Golden Visa more than just a way to get residency. It has become an active part of Portugal's growth story.

What This Means for Future Investors

Portugal Golden Visa currently requires a minimum investment of €250,000 in a cultural heritage donation or €500,000 in the approved fund. As more capital comes into these funds then leaving this data shows growing interest in the investment pathway.

According to the recent updates on Portugal’s Golden Visa, investors worldwide show robust interest even after the changes in the program. Portugal remains a desirable destination for investors and families looking to move without complete relocation.

Conclusion

The €6.7 billion rise in Portugal’s FDI is a strong headline on its own but the real story sits underneath it. The Golden Visa fund route has become investors' interest as it is bringing nearly 3 times more capital than its losing. For investors considering Portugal residency by investment routes, the Golden Visa has become one of the most popular and reliable options.
